Global retailers entering Japan, China, and South Korea routinely localise their products, formats, and pricing. Walmart entered South Korea in 1998 and eventually expanded to 16 stores before exiting in 2006, selling the entire operation to local retailer Shinsegae. Home Depot entered China in 2006 through the acquisition of a local chain and closed its remaining big-box stores in 2012. Both companies made some local adjustments, but neither adapted its overall proposition deeply enough.
